For a good many reasons.
Specifically, to secure the US oil interests in the Middle East. Secondly, to finish what G. Bush Sr. started there and left 'unfinished'. Third, because Bush needed a reason to get into a war, and used the 9/11 fiasco as a springboard to boost the defense spending and grant contracts to all of his buddies.

Because the Bush administration needs to find a scapegoat for 911. And Saddam Hussein seemed like an easy target at that time. He did turn out to be an easy target. The Iraqi army was not committed to fight for Saddam anyway. No weapons of mass destruction were found. Iraq has tons of oil reserves. While North Korea is a barren land which has none of the rich oil reserves which Iraq has. North Korea is a clear, present and real nuclear threat. Yet the Bush administration is not as willing to whack it as there is no obvious return on war investment as it is with Iraq.

We went to Iraq because we have a president who was determined from day 1 to go to Iraq. It had nothing to do with WMD or anything else. He did what he could to try to convince a nation; took advantage of 9/11 to justify his actions, even though Iraq wasn't involved, and continues to try to make his case, albeit with decreasing effect.
Iraq is an unjust war begun with deceit, and malice toward a soverign nation.

For oil..We are not in Iraq becuase of Twin towers..Not one of those suicidal idiots were from Iraq they were all arabians..

I'm not a US citizen, we didn't go to Iraq :)
But yes, I have truly no idea why the US went to Iraq, it's horrible.

who cares. only thing to do now is to get out. our guys are getting attacked every 15 minutes. the iraqi people do not want us there 2 out of 3 of them want us out. we are now fighting the iranians.most americans want our guys home. prepare to exit now. the day the new president is sworn into office will be the day we exit that hellhole.write it down.
