My parents have always removed the bruised areas of bananas, apples, and other fruits that bruise. I am just curious why this is? Does it taste bad? Is it bad for you (it can't be this reason)?

I usually do for every fruit except maybe bananas, depends on how bad the bruising is. That part is just mushy and not that pleasant to eat. Sometimes on bananas if it is not too much of a bruise I really don't notice it and just eat it anyways.

It doesn't actually hurt to eat it but I don't think you'd want to.

The bruised area of apples, peaches and nectarines tastes terrible. We don't waste any bruised fruit. It all gets fed to our pets, especially rats and hamsters like it.

It isnt bad for you it is just damaged, the proteins have been oxidized. You can eat it without it harming you it is just that most people dont like the texture. They think that because it is blackened or soggy that there is something wrong with it. I mean it does look gross and that is why people dont eat it but if you want to try it go for it. I usually cut mine out or eat around it but sometimes you dont see it like on peaches and you just deal with it.

I think the Bible says 'bruising your fruit' is a one-way ticket to hell.

I remove it. It's a texture and visual appeal thing, I think.
