The Bible describes it as proof of the Holy Ghost entering a person, as a pure prayer language to God and a sign to unbelievers. I speak in tongues. What are YOUR thoughts?

This behavior belief is disputed by all Biblical authorities and only "performed" by charlatans which impede the cause of Christ.

You are totally wrong, the Bible describes Tongues as the prophets speaking in many different "tongues" or different languages. Languages even they did not know so that the many would understand while they preached at passover, because there was so many there from all over that spoke many different languages. The Holy Spirit came into them so that they could speak the other languages. That is the real original meaning of tongues. Saying you speak in tongues simply means you speak in different languages, or a different language. It has nothing to do with so called "pure" prayer.

The purpose of the gift of tongues was to aid the apostles in sharing the good news about the Christ to all the Jews and proselytes from far away who spoke different languages. It was a sign of authenticity or divine backing. (see Acts 2:16-22) Interestingly, not all Christians spoke in tongues. (1 Corinthians 12:28-31) Further, the gift of tongues would cease (1 Corinthians 13:8) The Christian congregation was in its infancy and, as Paul pointed out, these miraculous gifts (including speaking in tongues) were a feature of the babyhood of the Christian congregation. When Christianity reached maturity by becoming a recognized, established organization, the miraculous gifts passed away. When Christians spoke in tongues in the first century, it edified the listeners. The inspired message was to be clear and intelligible. (1 Corinthians 14:26-28) The identification of true Christians is not in the ability to speak in tongues, but is as Jesus said at John 13:35 - "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.

The cool thing now is that there is only anecdotal evidence that anybody has done it as the Bible describes. When I attended a class once, they said to just let your mouth move and let the spirit speak. It came out as babbling. Nobody understood it.

In the Bible, Tounges was to propogate the faith to those who spoke different languages. Now, it is simply proof that one has been 'born again'. Nobody needs understand the words or validate that it is an actual language. Some say that it is the language of the angels; why then does it sound so different? If it were a language at all, angels or otherwise, it would have structure and with enough recordings would be able to evidence some sort of information.

Modern 'tongues' is only babbling by those who believe that they have had the Holy Spirit" alight upon them. If they believe it, fine. To me it is nonsence.

Where in the Bible does it state that it is a pure prayer language to God? The Spirit's groaning is not necessarily to be interpreted as our groaning. Where does it say it is proof of the Spirit entering a person? It is just one of the Spiritual gifts. Many Spirit filled Christians do not speak in tongues, and it would be wrong to conclude that they are not filled with the Spirit if they don't.

I believe tongues are a gifting of the Spirit, to be used by the Spirit for His purposes, according to His will. In Acts, the Apostles spoke, and those who were listening heard what they were saying in their own language, a Spiritual translation of their spoken words.

There are many gifts of the Spirit, and tongues was given specific instructions and warnings. The need for interpretation in corporate assembly, for example.

There was one incident I recall that a person "speaking" in tongues was commanded to stop by another person in the church. Apparently, she was cursing and blaspheming God in his native language.

The Bible never states it as "evidence" of the Holy Ghost. It does state the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith... Galatians 5:22 and the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth... Ephesians 5:9. A true Christian possesses these characteristics. The "Who stole my Honda - Tie my yellow bow tie ya" stuff that goes on today is not what the early church practiced nor what intended to become. What goes on in churches today is hyped up gibber jabber brought on by highly trained con artists who pump the crowd with fast paced music and activity. "Woo! Glawry to Gawd!" These guys/gals want to put on a good show for a good love offering... and they want the crowd to feel like they got their money's worth.

Tongues in the Bible was a gift for the apostles to preach the gospel to others with a different language than their own. God was equipping the apostles to do the work he commissioned them with... to reach the world with the gospel. Tongues was never intended on being a secret prayer language like TBN would have you believe.

1 Corinthians 14:18-19... I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Well, as an amateur student of linguistics, I can tell you that a tongue is about the same as a language. So speaking in tongues would be the same as speaking in languages. Therefore, if you can speak in at least two languages, you can speak in tongues.

Any other meaning attributed to the expression is an attempt to manipulate the language to make it mean something it doesn't.

glossolalia - incomprehensible speech in an imaginary language, sometimes occurring in a trance state, an episode of religious ecstasy, or schizophrenia.

As no one has ever 'understood' what a person in this state has actually said (or even actually broken it down into recognizable syntax), I pose that it is just a stimualtion of the speech centers of the brain during times of emotional intensity. Those that say they can 'understand' it are reading their own meanings into it, and using it to further their own agenda.

Prego.
