What a good question. Many Jews actually did follow Jesus. But you're right, many did not (in His day), and today in modern times, it's relatively few who have discovered that Jesus is indeed their Messiah.

The Book of Romans in the bible talks about Israel (the Jews) being temporarily "blinded" by God to who Jesus is. They put Him on a cross and mocked Him. For that purpose, God took away the gospel from the Jews and gave it to the gentiles. This time we are living in is called, in fact, the time of the gentiles or the church age. God will once again deal with Israel, but not until the "fulness of the gentiles" has come in. Jesus is now the "stone that the builders rejected"...the Jews cannot now see Jesus for who He truly is....the son of God, the Christ.

The Jews do believe Jesus was a great Rabbi and Teacher. But not the promised Messiah that would free them from the roman rule and lead them to triumph over all other religions.
the First Christians were a mix of Jews and Gentiles.
He taught peace and understanding rather than the way of the sword against your enemies.

Unfortunately most of the Jewish religious leaders of his day had become so puffed up with their own importance that they did not want Jesus to expose their hypocricy and consequently, they denied that he was from God, when their knowledge of the scriptures could have been the very thing which could have confirmed it for the people. Sad, but many Jews today have come to know and love Jesus and will find eternal life in spite of the past. God knows their hearts and he continues to call to them if their heart condition is right.

The first Christians were Jews by birth. So, clearly, some Jews believed he was the Messiah. Other Jews that didn't believe he was God's son didn't believe because of their interpretation of Old Testament prophecy. They thought the Messiah would install his kingdom on earth right when he came the 1st time, in a very literal sense.

Because Jesus could not have been the messiah, for two reasons:

1. He claimed divinity. Not a SINGLE prophecy of the messiah permits him to do this.
2. He did not perform all of the messianic miracles. Until he did, every 'miracle' he performed was viewed, rightly, as the work of the Adversary.

Either Jesus was an insane lunatic who taught a good moral system before his insanity, OR, he was in league with the Accuser.

Take your pick.

It wasn't that they couldn't believe. It was that the hearts of the jewish religious leaders were corrupt and not inclined toward doing what was right. They were concerned that their high positions were going to be taken away. Note what John 11:47, 48 says:

Consequently the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the San´he·drin together and began to say: “What are we to do, because this man performs many signs? If we let him alone this way, they will all put faith in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

The first disciples of Jesus were Jews, but many Jews did not believe in him. Those Jews who did believe in him, believed that he was the Messiah whom the Jews were awaiting. The Jews now who don't believe in Jesus, are still awaiting the Messiah.

People in general do not like it when people try to change their religion. Jesus said he was the messiah promised in the torah. The Jews refused to accept jesus as their messiah. Those who did accept became the Christians.
