I am a believer and I do not believe that prayer should be in school. When most people speak of prayer in school they are only talking about their own religion, namely conservative protestants, and they are speaking of a school sanctioned prayer. They do not consider that for the government to allow prayer in school they would have to let every religion pray in school which would mean there would be a pray said by every faith or there would be one prayer which was devoid of any reference to any religion. For the government to allow prayer, they would not be able to endorse any religion. The reality is that prayer is in the schools. Every time a child takes a test there is prayer. Teachers of faith pray in school. When religious clubs meet on campus (allowed by law), there is prayer. The reality is that there is prayer in schools. A government sponsored prayer is not good because it would violate the constitution or it would be so generic that it would still make people unhappy. In the past, when the government has sponsored a particular religion it did not have happy results.

1.Prayer in school could influence a child to be thankful and more appreciative of others.

2.If a child is taught about God in school then the child has a better chance of having good morals and is more respectful of others

This website has great reasons for why prayer should be in school. Hope this helps.

From the United States Constitution
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The states, of course, have the freedom to restrict the free exercise of religion and do.
If you are a Buddhist and a Muslim prays does it bother you?
If you are a Navajo and a Maori prays does it bother you?
If a Christian to prays to Jesus...everybody flips out!

i am sorry i cannot do that.

if you allow prayer to one god, than you have to allow prayer to all gods and dieties. it will only cause more reason for kids to pick on each other and to bully each other over what god they believe in.

how would you feel if you were saying your nice little prayer and i was beside you calling to Ceunnerrouus and the Morrigan.
and little billy in fornt of you was calling to Satan.
and the kid bedide you was praying to Allah.
and the athiest behind you just chanted BUlls**t.... bulls**t ....bulls**t..

and the agnostic in the front of the class took the time to read about the occult....these are all things that are prevelant in our society. the only thing that makes many people feel safe in their self isolated worlds is that they do not see it.

It teaches the student that there is something greater than themselves.
It teaches them to be mindful of the needs of others.
It teaches humility.
Also, we all have started to pray for something and then realized what we were asking for was not really a good thing. It changes our hearts.

It shouldn't. Unless it's a private school--end of argument, game over, please and thank you.

*I would also like to say, after reviewing the posts above mine, that prayer would detract from MUCH needed language-arts education time. Spell check is your friend, kiddies!
