I have a cat, and, when everyone in the house is either sleeping or gone out, we put our cat in the basement, with food, water (which we change reguarly), litterbox, and somewhere to sleep...he ALSO has all these items in the upper level of our house, and more. When someone is around, hes around people and such

My question is, How can I keep his water and food clean and fresh while in the basement (I dont want germs and bugs in his water) I know i have to change it often and stuff, which i do, but for the time that he and the food are down there, i want it to be clean. AND NO, keeping him in the basement while were out/sleeping is the ONLY option!

There are several products on the market to keep water fresh. Some are based on how much water is in a bowl and when it dips below a certain level, the dish is filled from a tank above. Others let the animal lick water from a drip spout. None of these are expensive.

Go to a pet store and ask. You will find a variety of products. Hopefully you will find one that meets your needs.

As far as keeping things "fresh", since it is only for a few hours, what are you worried about? Cats will eat icky rancid dead things and survive just fine.

Change the water everyday, use a self watering bowl even.
If you are feeding the cat dry food downstairs then it just needs to be checked for foreign things.
Perhaps putting the food and water on a shelf (where cat can get it LOL) so that it is off the floor.
If you give the cat wet food at night, take any uneated portion away in the morning and make sure bowls are washed out well.

Mind you cats love chasing bugs and eating them. Germs will always be there.

My cat would be thrilled with bugs, he loves to chase them and eat them. Although I find this kind of gross, he is a very healthy cat.

You can buy a self filling water dispenser at most pet stores as the cat drinks, fresh water is dispensed. Same with dry food.

Cats are tough as nails.

They and Cockroaches will outlive us all.

I think you're doing a good job now, but if bugs are getting in the water, you can buy a water-feeder (kind of like hamsters have, only bigger) at your local petsmart or maybe even walmart. Good luck!

get one of those water containers for cats from the pet shop..no bugs can get inside of them..as for food..feed your cat in the moring..let him eat then take away what he dont eat...do not leave it lying around...then in the evening ..do the same thing...just make sure he has water at all times though...the recomendation for cats is meat and dry in the morning and just dry in the evening...clean his litter tray everytimwe you see it dirty..as cats dont like to pee or pooh in a dirty litter box...and may take up peeing and pooing elsewhere if the tray is not clean..good luck
