The defeat of Satan through the powerful blood of Jesus.
The Christian religion , started by Christ , spread by his apostles , continues to grow even today; Christians make up the largest religious group in the entire world.
The cross is no longer an emblem of shame, but a sacred emblem of victory of the conquering lamb.
Our lamb has conquered, let us follow.

Really nothing. To me, his death represents nothing more than the act of martyrdom, which is no more special than the thousands of martyrs before and after his death. I don't celebrate his death. The fact that he came back is what amazes me. I celebrate his life and the love he showed for the very people who hurt and abandoned him by coming back. Many people in history have shown their love by dying. The real love comes from someone who would leave heaven for us, even for a short while.
What is really crazy is that most Christians will tell you that the most significant Christian holiday is Easter, the day that Jesus came back to life. Why, then, is the famous holy symbol represent something that happened on Good Friday?
The cross has significant meaning for many people and I'm happy for them. To me, it's just jewelery in the form of ancient Crucifixion.
Those who "thumbs down" my answer are narrow-minded indeed. The asker was asking for an honest answer and that's what I had. Just because it's different from the mainstream point of view does not make it any less an honest answer than the others.

The sign means a lot of things. The sign of the cross is: a confession of faith; a renewal of baptism; a mark of discipleship ; an acceptance of suffering; a defense against the devil; and a victory over self-indulgence.

Besides that which you alredy mentioned, the cross means different things to different people. To me it is a reminder that Christ died for our salvation.
It is a reminder that we all need to take up our cross and bear it just as He bore it for us.

When I make the sign of the cross I am saying that everything that I do is for His glory. That He upholds all things by the power of His Word.

It is the sign of our Redemption.
1 Cor 1:18
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Gal 3:1
You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.
Sounds like they were looking at a Crucifix... doesn't it??

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS
WHEN we cross ourselves, let it be with a real sign of the cross. Instead of a small cramped gesture that gives no notion of its meaning, let us make a large unhurried sign, from forehead to breast, from shoulder to shoulder, consciously feeling how it includes the whole of us, our thoughts, our attitudes, our body and soul, every part of us at once. how it consecrates and sanctifies us.
It does so because it is the Sign of the universe and the sign of our redemption. On the cross Christ redeemed mankind. By the cross he sanctifies man to the last shred and fibre of his being. We make the sign of the cross before we pray to collect and compose ourselves and to fix our minds and hearts and wills upon God. We make it when we finish praying in order that we may hold fast the gift we have received from God. In temptations we sign ourselves to be strengthened; in dangers, to be protected. The cross is signed upon us in blessings in order that the fulness of God's life may flow into the soul and fructify and sanctify us wholly.
Think of these things when you make the sign of the cross. It is the holiest of all signs. Make a large cross, taking time, thinking what you do. Let it take in your whole being,--body, soul, mind, will, thoughts, feelings, your doing and not-doing,-- and by signing it with the cross strengthen and consecrate the whole in the strength of Christ, in the name of the triune God.

It signifies Gods love, an understanding between Christ and me. A reminder of the price He paid, the ultimate price, giving His only Son to die for our sins. It also reminds me to be thankful day by day and to serve him in all I do. It is also a daily reminder of the peace and comfort I share with all who know HIM and who have given their hearts to HIM, all my brothers and sisters in Christ.

It's a symbol of torture that many people choose to wear around their necks on a chain. I've often wondered why I don't see people running around with little electric chairs on a chain around their necks. That would be the modern day equivalent.
