When someone has a "beer belly" (a large belly area but a thin body), how come it feels kind of firm? I've noticed this on a lot of people with beer bellies. If it is fat then it should be mushy right? Please someone explain this to me.

This is due to tightly-packed adapose tissue and thick skin around the abdomen. Also, lots of organs in that area make for a "tighter" feel when palpated.
Cortisol is commonly stored in the abdominal fat and is considered a "bad" thing. Good to get rid of abdomen fat as a high percentage of it seems to lead to heart disease, etc.

Depending on the particular person, it can be because the fat and flab is laying on top of muscle and/or bloat (from gas) or over a distended belly that feels (much like a beach ball) "firm".

The firmness is the muscle that used to be in better shape, but now is surrounded by fat cells.
