You do need a visa for China and you will need more than one visa if you are visiting more than one place in China OR you are just stopping down in a city in China even if you don't even leave the airport.

A visa is required for the PRC.
If travelling as a tourist, an L VIsa can be obtained from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country. It takes at least one to two weeks to process.
There are different options available when applying for a tourist visa which can allow for single entries to the PRC or multiple entries. If you are travelling to Haikou and plan also to visit Hong Kong or Macau during your trip and then return to Haikou, you should get a multiple entry visa (which of course, costs more).
I suggest you obtain the Visa before leaving home. Others may suggest that you let some Visa agency arrange it for you if you go to Hong Kong as part of your trip. Don't..those agencies charge steep handling fees and they can't always deliver what they promise..
Be advised that some airlines will not let you board a China bound aircraft unless you have a valid PRC Visa in your passport. And the only way you can get a visa is from a PRC consulate or embassy. Camping out at an airport for 24 hours will not change that.

You will definitely need a visa. My company has an office in China. Our CEO got all the way to the airport and found out when he was in customs that the paperwork his assistant put through for his visa was completed. He had to camp out at the airport for 24 yours until the paperwork could be pushed through.
According to this website, which looks like a pretty good source, you can obtain a free visa.

Scroll down to the very bottom there's a link on how to get a visa.

Hi, you need to apply for the China Visa and you can have the transit flight at Hongkong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, shenzhen, beijing, etc. Flying from Hongkong is the most expensive option, and from Shenzhen or Guangzhou can be the least expensive option. Good luck!

Stays inside China must be confined to hotels only; otherwise you would need to report to the local police station to register yourself (Temporary Resident Permit)
