I have 4 cockatiels. 3 of them male, 1 female. I know that males are the ones more of a chance picking this stuff up. Thing is my birds are not babies anymore. 2 of them are 13 years old, 1 is 8 years old and one is 5 years old. Do you think they have a chance of picking some words or theme whistles from those Repetitive CDs where they play the word, wait 10 sec. then play it again. Or same with the whistles to certain songs, play short parts of the song and wait 10 sec. then play again or do you think because they are no longer younger that it will never happen?

Suppose this isn't something one would know, depends on my birds. Just wondering if anyone else has had luck or failure on this.

Also if you had success with this, which whistles/words did they seem to pick up?

Thanks!

I had a male that would sing all the time. My female...not so much. They both started early, though, but if my 4 year old dog can learn how to open the fridge, I'd imagine it would take a more mature bird a little longer to learn.

Cockateils are not meant to be able to learn to speak if they are older or in a cage with other birds (all the books say this) - however my male cockateil picked up a good number of words despite never being on his own (he was still young though). Wolf whistles and mobile phone ring tones seem to be the easiest for them to pick up (and quite amusing at times also). The words mine learnt were hello, good morning, sam, polly
Good luck!

well i have a parakeet i taught how to whistle and talk, its just a matter of time and patience, i worked with george (my parakeet) for 15 minutes at a time, birds have a short attention span but if you keep repeating the same phrase or whistle to the bird it will eventually learn so my best advice is be patient and talk in a nice soft tone of voice. they dont respond well to loud voices it only scares them
