*What does the light refer to in the song.. this little light of mine? *
It refers to ones Knowledge of The Lord.

Belief in God, let it shine, dont hide it inside.
I always loved that song, and now there is a more adult oriented version Hold out your candle. It is an awesome song and right up there with many many other favorite songs of mine.

Jesus was the Light. The Light was sent to believers in the form of the Holy Spirit. When we bahave as Christ did, we are shining His light in the world... or glorifying God... or setting an example of Christ

The light is showing your life as a "light unto darkness"
When you show love and kindness to one another in the name of Christ, you are showing light.
