Help! I had my retainers in my back pocket and now they don't feel right in my mouth. I moved out of state from where I had my braces, which have only been off for 2 months, and the ortho said I would need new impressions here to get a replacement. I don't want to pay here (since i am still paying the other ortho), so can I bend them back myself? How much damage would it do to wear them as they are? Would it be better to not wear them at all?

Well snaggletooth, I would suggest going back to the doctor and getting them fixed before corrupting my teeth any worse than they already are.

NO..NO..NO.. Dear God, dont adjust it yourself.

After all that money you have forked out, you'll beat yaself up knowing you could have been the reason for your teeth back tracking. NEVER.. EVER try bending or reshaping or adjusting a retainer after it has been bent or twisted from sitting on them. Go back to your ortho or another orthodontist for the adjustments. They have the appropiate tools to readjust it and fix it correctly. You'll definitely be paying some money out if you break it or damage it leading them to make a new one. Dont risk, messing up your smile/teeth again! And dont risk, having to pay for a new retainer.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.

Do NOT try to bend them back yourself! If they are not done the right way, you'll end up moving your teeth to some new position that you don't like. It MIGHT be possible to mail them back to your orthodontist who can fix them on your existing models, which they will still have on file.

People talking on the cell phone while driving aggravate me more than I can say. If your life is so busy and important that you have to be yakking on the cell phone, hire a chauffeur. If your life isn't so busy and important, then you've got the time to pull over somewhere and take the blankety-blank call safely. Either way, keep the cell phone in the pocket or purse until you can talk without endangering those around you.

They're pretty fragile so you might break them if you try to bend it (trust me, I broke those wire parts twice already). It could do damage if you wear them, but also not wearing them would make your teeth shift out of position. The only thing to do is fix it...

No, you should not try to do it yourself. Like braces, retainers also provide customized solution to keep your teeth in proper position that has been finally achieved while in braces. A visit to Orthodontist (new or your old one) is the only best solution, lest you find yourself at square one very soon.
