first hair and skin color is an genetically phenomena but over times it has occured as a protective procedure against ultraviolet of sunlight which is harmful to DNA and cells
so it is innate. and on the other hand ther is another prompt adaptation that keep skin from sunlights as scattering of melanin ,protective dark brown pigments in our skin, but as far as i know hair has almost
an permanent color and its darkness contribute to this preserving action.

The sun will bleach anything to a lighter color
On the skin it produces melatonin which is dark and thereby reduces the burning and penetrating action on the skin.

The short answer is: your hair is dead, but your skin is alive.

The sun bleaches the color from anything, including hair.

But your skin reacts to sun bu producing a dark pigment called melanin. It is trying to protect itself from further sun damage by keeping light out.

The sun naturally bleaches things, but your skin is living and contains melatonin(sp?) that darkens it in order to help protect it from the suns damaging rays.

Your hair is not alive....Your skin IS. The sun bleaches the pigments out of your hair....but you skin reacts to the sun by storing more pigments to block the extra light.

"It does seem weird that the sun bleaches our hair and darkens our skin. This mostly has to do with hair being dead and skin being alive."
