Ideally you would go visit your dentist and have him fit you with a mouthguard to fit over your lower teeth. It won't actually prevent you from trying to clenching your teeth- but will act as a buffer and cushion for them because it's made of a soft plastic.

If you can't get one professionally fitted- go to the sports department or a sports shop and buy a mouth guard like those worn by football players. They are molded to your mouth by dropping them in hot water, or a quick heat in the microwave- the package will give directions. It won't fit as well as the one a dentist will make, but should help the problem until you get on done.

You also need to see what you can do to identify if there are things going on in your life which would stress you out to the point you would do this in your sleep. If you go to bed highly irritated or stressed over something, it will increase the chance you grit your teeth or clench your jaw. If you can eliminate or alleviate the stress, it will help as well.

Many people grind or clench their teeth because they do not meet exactly correctly. If your teeth do not meet correctly, they cause your jaw to shift slightly out of the joint to compensate for the mismatch in your bite. A splint - when properly made - will eliminate the influence of the teeth over the position the bones take in the TMJ. It will allow your jaw to rest in the balanced (and comfortable) position where it belongs. After wearing a splint for a while, your dentist might suggest some adjustments to your bite, slightly altering (grinding) the surfaces so that they no longer have any interferences to closing with your jaw in the proper position.

Don't buy a cheap sporting mouth guard..... I did that before I had my bite guard (professionally made by my dentists office). I broke the cheapy because I clenched and ground my teeth so hard, and did major damage to my gums and cheeks. If you go to the dentist they make it specifically to fit you and the type of night habit you have.

That might never happen. Get a nightguard...that way you do not damage your teeth and it will let take pressure off your jaw.

You can't prevent it, but you can preven the damage to your teath by wearing a night guard. It is custom made piece of soft plastic that your dentist can make for you. You wear it on your teeth overnight.

Well what you are in need of is a night guard. you can get a cheap one like at Wal-mart or CVS, in the sport section. But that one wont last very long. The best one you can invest in, is one made professionally by your dentist. you should get one asap, it will prevent future problems. Good luck
