i have a high metabolism and have difficulty gaining weight. the simple formula to follow is take in more calories than you burn off. I find that weight training is the best way to keep in shape while putting on the pounds. It will not make you muscular since you're a female and you have way lower levels of testosterone than males do. Testosterone is what's responsible for muscularity in males.
As a result of weight training you will be toned and increase your strength and muscular endurance. Aim for high reps (12-15 per set, 2-3 sets per exercise) with low to medium weight. You know the weight is appropriate if you feel a little tired by the 12 or 15 rep. If you don't, increase the weight. Avoid any type of cardio work.
since you're very skinny, you can afford to eat foods with higher fat content like ice cream and whole milk, and eat more carbs. Make sure to include protein as well with each meal to build muscle. Fat has more calories per gram than protein or carbohydrates.

Okay I have your problem, and here is some serious answers that I have researched/been told. First of all, still eat healthy, dont stuff yourself silly, and do excercise.
Eat higher calorie fruits and veggies (bananas, carrots, apples basically any fruit and veggie that is not watery.
protein! Eat lean meat, eat peanutbutter, ask your doctor about taking some protein powder, my doc prescribed me some to take, and it actually doesn't taste to bad.
Eat healthy high calorie foods like nuts, legumes, wheat crackers.
Never be plain. Top your toast with maregines made with healthy fats, peanut butter, jelly. add cheese to your scrambled eggs. This will add calories without filling you up. Cook with healthy olive oil and sprinkle it on your saled, add eggs, crackers and other filling stuff to your salads. fill omelets with cheese and veggies. Order creamy soups.
Swich to whole grains, there healthier and more calorie dense. Eat complex carbohydrates, not loads of sugar.
Eat 3 meals and at least 3 snacks.
here are some healthy high calorie snack ideas.
1. plain full fat yogurt and frozen berries blended together and some peanuts mixed, makes a great dip.
2. Cheesy garlic bread made with whole wheat bread.
3.peanut butter on toast with bananas washed down with full fat milk.
4.whole wheat blueberry muffins, or pancakes
5. Pasta!
6. homemade pizza.
Now, If you wanna gain weight but still be healthy do weight training and resistance excercises. Do crunches, and buy hand and ankle weights, and use them. And jump rope too, or swim.remember muscle ways more than fat!
And dont worry about being muscular, as a girl you would need to train a certain way and eat a certain way to get muscular and even then, most girls just CANT. If you are worried lift light dumbells lots of reps, this will help you have strong muscles but they will be tight and not bulgy(but strong)

What weight are you that you consider yourself being "too" skinny? It is a lot healthier for you to be on the thin side. If you make yourself gain weight by eating foods that are high in Fat and Calories, you will affect your overall health in a negative way such as having a high cholesterol, and then clogging your arteries. So stay with healthy type foods, lots of veggies, beans, whole grains pastas and rice, nuts (especially almonds), tofu, and drink at least a gallon of water a day if you can.

Good for you angel!! I was worried that you'd be one of those pathetic, "am i fat?', girls. Eat late at night, that will usually put some weight on. also, they have great drinks at the health food store that are packed with calories. Work out too! this will give you great muscle tone.
