This happens all the time: I am on a website, and I want to make some quick notes about something on the page. Using Favorites is not enough; I need to have a way to write a mental reminder about the subject I am viewing that can be accessible wherever I am on the internet ( or off it). I would really appreciate some ideas both free applications or programs and stuff I'd have to purchase. I was hoping it could be similar to a bookmark but be a window within a window and permit me to write about what I have selected and to create subcategories, if I want to.
I really need this because I do a great deal of research....help!

One program that might help is the Palm Desktop. As well as being able to sync with a Palm handheld device, it has a memo function. You can type in the subject, and copy and past the URL and / or information from the website into the content box. While intended for use with handheld devices, the palm desktop works as well as a standalone app. I believe that you can download the desktop from Palm for free.

Open your windows notepad and make the notes there and then save as: "the name of the page you visited."

Hope that helps.

p.s. There is a program called "post-it" that pops up little post-it notes that you can save the same way on memoboards.
