Try AVG Antivirus Free Edition from Grisoft.
I have done hundreds of installations and seen happy faces. It works very well, provides real-time protection, has small daily-updates and never expires on you.
Most importantly its not a bloat-ware and quite unobtrusive. Works well even on 64MB machines.

A virus and a worm are not the same and its much easier to safeguard against virus-worms have to really watch and be careful of your E-mail for thats how worms get in. Try Zonelab its free but can get and pay for amore aspecialized or commercial Go to www.zonelabs.com for you get protect against virus, spyware, firewall,ID theft protection,E-mail, Spam and more You also get free updates as they become available and it is totally free and when you no longer want has a uninstall-for some programs when you no longer want good luck in getting rid of it. I've used Zone AlaRM for a long time with 0 virus, spyware, and like the program for all that goes into computer including E-mail gets checked first automatically

I've been using Avast for a couple of years now, and it keeps my system clean. When I first downloaded, it picked up two viruses and canned the nasty things. Haven't had an invasion since then. It's free and it works. Doesn't get much better than that.

AVG Anti-Virus is generally considered to be the best free anti virus scanner. Most agree that is up to par, if not better than the majority of the retail virus scanners. Recieved 4/5 stars on download.com, not bad for a free program. heres the downlaod link http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10543927.html?tag=lst-6-1

There are three I can think of at the moment:
Panda.com
Symantec.com
PCCillin.com
You can also run free scans there. You may be asked to download active x controls, say yes.
