would you like someone to say "may you be cursed with the wounds of a meth junkie oozing with puss while AIDS dissolves your internal organs because a few years ago you decided that you wanted to be cool and try some pot which eventually lead you to harder drugs like some of the unfortunates we see urinating on themselves after an *** reaming from the cell block captain in one of many super max prisons" ? would you then feel the gratitude that comes when a little human kindness is shown you by those who know not the hell of your past?

In medieval times, the doctors believed that disease or ill humors could be caused by demons. And when a person sneezed, it was advisable to say god bless, to protect themselves, and to help the person who had the demon possesion.

You could always respond with
"Thank you for blessing me! I hope the demons won't infest you either!"

You are a nasty and vulgar human being.
What has happened to you, for you to be such a negative person? Go hide in a cave with the rest of the nut cases.
Try not to shoot anyone on your way to your cave.

They are saying it out of kindness, but I can see you don't appreciate common kindness, do you kick someone if they hold the door for you. By the way give yourself $5 because I am sure you have your own phrase already.

Think of it more in terms of their intention. They're sending you what they think is a positive and friendly gesture. I'm sure, they can't imagine that someone would rather get cussed out. If they knew that, they would never say it to that person.

I ignore it. Get a chuckle out of folks who get annoyed when I don't acknowledge it or get mad because I don't say it when they sneeze. Afraid the demons will get in, I reckon.
