I need to run a mile as fast as I can for a work competition. What will give me energy so I don't pass out after I run? Additionally, what's the best way to train for that? My current time is 9:55 and I'd like to beat that by a min or more. Thanks!

Eek, there's no magic food that is going to make you faster. You can definitely improve your time but that is going to take training, not really a different diet.

For the mile, you do not need to carbo-load. In fact, I'd recommend that you go slightly hungry before a time trial. The last thing you want to do is go running that fast with a full stomach. If you feel yourself getting a little "low" in sugar, consume a bit of gatorade.

The other answerers are right in suggesting complex carbohydrates but you want to consume them at least 2 hours prior to running (to avoid cramping / nausea).

The biggest bang you are going to get for your mile time is by training more. Try doing some 1/4 mile repeats and work on building your endurance by doing 2 - 3 mile runs a few times a week.

Feel free to drop me a line if you need further training tips.

complex carbs are you best option. They are a slow release energy source. If you're afraid of passing out have oxygen available at the finish line. Be careful of energy drinks, they can get you into trouble before you know it.

Orange juice and chocolate - train by increasing your stretching before and after the run. Make sure you do all types of leg stretches.

glycerine.

Newly discovered to be helpful for endurance events. When it breaks down, it releases both glucose and water.
