Examples of mental abuse in a relationship are whatever one person says to try to break down the other. It can be constant insults or comments made in order to break down their self-esteem and get them to think they're worthless losers.

It's not so much about exactly what is said, but about how much it's said. An insult can be a plain insult if it's a rare event, but when someone lets the insults and bad comments rain over someone on a daily basis that is abuse. Noone will be traumatized for life for being told once that they're stupid, but when you have to listen to it every day you start to believe it and it breaks you down and leaves you scarred for life.

The best way of dealing with abuse after leaving the relationship is probably to seek counselling and get some therapy. There you learn to deal with the emotional problems you have. Friends are great too. It's important to at least do something to learn to deal with the problems. The last thing that should be done is to just wait for the problem to disappear by itself, it won't. You have to work on it.

I know a man who threated to kill his wife if she ever left him. Well the day came when she did leave him, she couldn't sleep the whole night because she thought he was coming after her to kill her. He had told her this for a long time. So even after she left she had the emotional abuse of not knowing what to do and the mental abuse of wondering if he was going to follow thru on his promises. The best way for her to deal with this is to have friends (not necessary another man) that she can talk to about her problems and getting away from him, going somewhere he would not look for you and then maybe he will take you serious about the counseling that he promised he would go to to try and save the relationship.

I have walked down the path that you are walking down now, trust me. I am only 20 years old but I have been there done that. emotional abuse is when the guy messes with your emotions about the way you feel about situations, he makes you think that you are the stupidest person on earth. Mental abuse is when he messes with your head and tells you the wrong things to get you to hate life and want to go as far as suicide. Don't listen to him girl. You are smart and intelligent. You don't need a looser like him. The relationship I was in, it went as far as going to see a counselor. It has been 3 years and I am just now starting to see the light. Guys seem to always go after a weak area of the woman! Such as 'your fat' your stupid or something along those lines. When her self-image is destroyed-its easier for the dominating male to control this lady!

To break this hold a woman only has to see where this criticism is coming from! Believe in yourself because nothing is as sexy as a girl with CONFIDENCE!

When someone starts making you feel worthless or useless and when they actually say nasty things that bring your self-esteem down.Best thing is to leave such a relationship before it turns into physical abuse and get a shrink you can talk to.
