What is the difference between the two? I have worked as a carpenter for many years and tired of going nowhere. I was thinking about taking classes to become a civil engineering technician, but I am not sure if that is the same thing as a carpenter labor? I would hate to spend thousands of dollars to do the same job. Any information about this career field would be greatley appreciated. Thanks

Well from my experience, a civil eng tech would be heavily involved in computer aided drafting and or some computer design. I don't know any civil eng techs that would compare their job description to carpentry. Geotechnical enginering techs get out in the field most and do the concrete sampling and soil sampling. They would also get lab time in by testing the samples. Contruction engineers or stake pounders go out and set grades (set stakes in the ground to the design grade) and finish grades on earth moving and paving projects.
A civil engineering tech that has taken the computer design courses to become proficient can expect to work in an office environment with a steady 40 hours of work each week, year round.
Check out the texas a&M university website, under construction technology. It gives a break down on its 4 year program. They have a two year program as well. A local junior college for a two year program in computer aided design. Construction companies doing earthmoving, and highway projects would be the field experience.

As a c.e. tech, you could wind up doing many different things. Drafting, surveying, material testing, report generation, grade hopping for a contractor, well and pit logging and a structural engineer would love to have a former carpenter do structural inspections.

You would not be an engineer unless you got the four year degree.

A civil eng. tech., not unlike an electronic eng. tech. is, first and foremost, a technician. A carpenter is a carpenter, though none the less a "tradesman", still not a "technician". The job duties would depend on a lot of factors, but generally, they do the "heavy lifting" while the Engineer stays in the "shed" reading the blue prints and trusts his techs to see to it that the job gets done right.

Civil eng is better because india's investment in infrastructure is increasing and there's going to be a boom in this sector.
