Not sure how accurate the suggestion to lick yourself, let dry, then try smelling it is, since dry things rarely smell bad.

BEst suggestion I ever heard was this: Get a CLEAN facecloth.moisten it slightly (not dripping, not able to squeeze water out, just slightly damp). Now use it to scrub your tongue. Wait 1-2 minutes, then sniff it. If it smells, so does your breath.

This isn't foolproof though.

MOST bad breath is due to not brushing AND flossing properly, and/or often enough.

A LOT of temporary bad breath is due to icky foods (garlic, onion, Doritos, etc.)

But MANY cases of bad breath also have to do with other causes:
- infected gums, dental decay or infection
- exhaled virus germs in some cases ( I could always smell it if my brother or father or one coworker were coming down with colds, even before they knew, but not on most people)
- nasal infections
- digestion difficulties and stomach ailments
- acid reflux, or acids raised into the throat and mouth from vomiting

If your dental hygiene is thorough and frequent, and you're not eating nasty-odor foods, check in with your dentist and/or doctor about persistent halitosis (bad breath).

Normally when your breath has an odor you can either taste it or smell it. For instance when you wake up in the morning your mouth feels like cotton or might taste pasty. That's a clear indication that you need to freshin up your breath before holding conversation with someone. Certain things you eat cause bad breath so try to stay away from them or have mints, gum, breath strips, floss and/or a toothbrush with toothpaste. You can try the breath test of holding your hand over your mouth blowing your breath into your hand. It's not the best way to tell but it will give you some sort of hint. Be careful not to offend others with bad breath. Be prepared with the items listed.

First, wash your hands. Next, stick your finger in your mouth and pull it out while it still has a little saliva on it.
Smell it. If it stinks, then you have your answer.
See the stuff you can think of when you're bored, lol?

i've heard that if you lick your the back of your hand let it stand to dry for 30 seconds then smell where you licked, if it smells bad your breath is bad if you can't smell anything your fine. i've never tried it as that seems sort of yucky and odd to me, but i've got friends that swear by it and they don't usually smell yucky so who knows?

Cup your hands over your mouth, breath _gently_ into the cup, wait a moment, then smell it.

Casually, so no one notices, lick the back of your hand, then, as it dries... smell it.
OR.. just ask someone.
I use this great stuff called Closys, it works great, you can get it at Walgreens and my wife says it really works. Toothpaste and gargle.

*Put your hand over your mouth and nose and breathe.

*Scrape the back of your tongue (your nail, a toothpick, a spoon, a dry tooth brush) and then smell it.

*If someone hands you a mint.

*Lick your wrist and then smell it.
