5' X 7' is the most common because it is the average area for a typical group seating arrangement. By the way don't put the front legs of your sofa or chairs on the rug unless you can balance out the back legs with something. Having your furniture on different levels puts stress on the furniture's frame which makes it wear-out faster.

If you just want a smaller one for that open area that the couches surround then measure that space and get a rug that will fit inside it. You dont really want like part of the rug under the couch but not under the love seat. What I mean is either put the whole seating area with table on a large rug or just the coffee table. Most often they are used to anchor a space and accent it so work with it accordingly.

I saw a decorating show once that talked about recommended sizes of area rugs and the answer was that the rug should be big enough so that at least the front legs of all sofa's chairs were on the rug.

Measure your table... I have seen mostly about 2-3 feet from each edge... That way they look proportional. If you get a really big rug your table looks tiny and it might make your room look smaller too.
