An ash tree can be any of four different tree genera from four very distinct families but originally and most commonly refers to trees of the genus Fraxinus in the olive family Oleaceae.
The ashes are usually medium to large trees, mostly deciduous though a few subtropical species are evergreen.
The leaves are opposite (rarely in whorls of three), and mostly pinnately-compound, simple in a few species.
The seeds, popularly known as keys, are a type of fruit known as a samara.
The wood is hard, tough and very strong but elastic, extensively used for making bows, tool handles, quality wooden baseball bats, hurley sticks and other uses demanding high strength and resilience. It is also used as material for the bodies of guitars, known for its bright, cutting tone and sustaining quality.
It also makes excellent firewood.

G'day Ash,
Okay, it's true that Fraxinus is one genus containing ash trees.

Here in Australia there are at least 2 more Genera that include common name "ash" In the southern part of Australia there are a few species of Eucalyptus trees called ash. Among them are some of our tallest and fastest growing trees - E. regnans (mountain ash).

In tropical North Australia some of our rainforest trees are known as ash. The genera Flindersia contains several ash trees, most where use for furniture construction in the bad old days of logging rainforest.

There are also many other rainforest species of ash that I can't recall the genus names.
Cheers Ash.

An ASH tree, is like a Maple, Elm, Oak, etc. except it is a different wood. From your spelling (not knocking it-please) I would guess you may not have them in your country. You might use Yahoo search to read up on them. They are quite a nice wood and are used in very expensive furniture.
