Hi does anyone know what will happen in Mass if you get in an accident and have no auto insurance? I didn't realize mine had run out when I got into an accident. I reported it to my insurance agent and was told that I had no insurance anymore. So now I am not sure what to do . I put insurance back on my vehicle but what will happen now? Please if anyone knows let me know thanks

No I did not report it to the new insurance company and no thank god no-one was hurt. Should I report it to the new company there isn't anything they can do is there?

oklatom, I was having issues with my agent so I asked him not to renew it when the policy ran out, Well Like I said I was having issues with him so not only did he not renew the policy he didn't inform me when it ran out. This is why I switched to a new agent. When I called my old agent to tell him about the accident is when he informed me that my policy expired.

Oh and yes it was my fault. I have been driving for 16 years and this was my first car accident go figure huh? had to be with no insurance. I just picled my kids up at school and upon entering the high way rear ended the car in front of me.

If the new policy wasn't in effect until after the accident, there is no point reporting this to them. The other person will most likely make a claim with their own carrier, who will then decide whether to pursue you directly for reimbursement. Unless it was so minor you can pay out of pocket (which I rarely recommend). If that person doesn't have the coverage with his carrier to pay it, he can sue you in small claims court, or up to a higher level court depending on the amount of damages.

I am not going to beat you up over not having insurance, because I know you now realize that as soon as you don't have any, an accident will happen!

As far as any citations, I really don't know. You will be responsible for any damages to the other car. If you're lucky the other insurance company will pay for the other cars' damages and work out some sort of payment plan. If you have the money to pay it do yourself a favor and PAY NOW. Insurance companies don't play around with their money and they will sue you if need be and will show no mercy. Just try to keep your cool when the adjusters come a'calling.
PS -- I would try to avoid any person to person settlement unless you both agree to let a lawyer draw up a simple agreement first. It will cost you a couple of hundred bucks but will protect you in case the other party suddenly turns nasty.

It really depends. First and foremost, was the accident your fault or not? Everything hinges on that. If it was your fault, you will have to pay out of pocket. If not, the fact you didn't have insurance doesn't matter.

The real question is, how did you not know you didn't have insurance? Surely you got a bill before it was due to run out, didn't you?

You will have to pay out of your pocket. Did you report to the accident to the new insurance company? Hopefully no one was hurt.

Obviously you will have to pay for damages if you are at fault. Normally either party will be ticketed for no insurance. It is a healthy one - here in God's country - WA, it is abou 550$. I am glad you appear to be uninjured.
