Hi, I've traveled a few times from Mexico City to Washington flying by United Airlines and what I have enjoyed the most is the chance to listen to the live communication between the flight deck and the air traffic controllers, which was available on channel 9 in the aircraft's audio system. However, I recently visited United's website and this feature is no longer mentioned in the audio programming list (it seems the airline switched to XM Satellite Radio from a time on). Does anyone know if channel 9 is still available, even if not noted in the website?

Channel 9 is absolutely still available. Not sure why they have removed mention of it from the web site. Glad to hear that you enjoy it and thanks for flying with us.

As of last week it was still available. The pilot can switch it off and on a couple of flights they've done just that when things sounded a bit dicey.

It relies, on natural United flights it has the ability to be on. But, the captain is the person who finally turns channel nine on, and if they do not, then you will not be ready to hear it. On United Express, due to the fact they are brief flights, they mostly do not need any musical/radio abilities so channel nine is not availabe.

Yes it is, as of just about 4 weeks ago. It's a great way to learn more about IFR operations. If you are a private pilot, you will certainly appreciate it! Of course, it is the Captain's discretion (as PIC) to have this on or not.
