Your hands should be somewhere left of your head. Whether it is higher or lower than your head really depends on the type of shot you are trying to hit.

I've heard high up off the shoulder opposite your swing. However, this might take away from your natural swing. It depends on which club your swinging too. Irons that are shooting soft are less likely to take the full swing. Just remember to stretch slowly and with increasing increments. The more limber you are the higher and farther your back swing will travel. Remember that your ultimate speed at contact comes from a higher and longer swing. This gives you the whip movement that allows the most speed at contact. If your tight you can only muscle through your swing. I've muscled through my swings for many years with 300 plus yards on the travel, but by whipping it I get 290 yards and I can do it for the full 18 holes. Muscle only gets you to the 14-15th. Then you lose distance dramatically.

Most peoples hands end up in the same spot...it just feels natural.
The interesting part is how your hands got there....did you smooth it like Tiger, almost hit your toes like Furyk, or convulse like Charles Barkley?
I do know one rule of thumb...I hope your hands end up still on the golf club at the end of your swing.

It depends on the type of shot you are trying to hit(Punch, knock down, pitch, chip). You want to end up half way through up to a high finish depending on shot.

Draped over your left shoulder if you are right handed. Between your head and the end of your shoulder.

I had it explained to me that they should be high up over your shoulder in a position that would be like a waiter carrying a tray of drinks.
