Last week i noticed our long haired cat had some semi bald patches on his tummy but when i asked my bf what he thought might be wrong he said that the cat had always had those. Then tonight my bf notices that in addition to the bald patches the cat has some raw scaby spots. Does he just dry sking and need some cod liver oil or could it be more serious? I'm a broke student so i dont want to take him to the vet if its nothing but if he needs to go i will definately take him.

My cat Montel does the same thing during the spring/summer months. I noticed a few days ago that he let it start growing back for the fall and winter. Montel also has the scabby places from time to time. His scabby places are from flea allergies. It only takes 1 flea bite to cause them to break out in scabs. That may be why he does so much licking there. Try some flea medicine and see if it helps. NEVER USE HARTZ. It poisons cats. If you need to use an over-the-counter flea med, go for Sargents(not sure if I spelled that right). My vet said Sargents is the safest, best working OTC flea medicine. A pack of 3 is only about $5.

Maybe try that and see if it helps. I noticed that when I keep the medicine on Montel, his scabs go away, but he still likes to lick his hair off. I've come to the conclusion that he's just a little weirdo. :P
When I took him to the vet to get his shots the vet didn't say anything about his bald tummy and inner back legs, so it must not be anything serious. However, everyone's different. If it gets worse or other symptoms show up with it, then I'd take him to the vet.

I do not like to say allways.. take the cat to the vet but if it licks itself constantly.. it could have something wrong with it internally.. DId you check it CAREFULLY for any fleas. check this carefully first and if you see any.. then give it a good bath in flea medicine shampoo today... then one week later.. do it again.. ALSO BE SURE TO spray where it sleeps.. spray one day and one week later, spray the bedding of the cat again.

The cat has fleas or allergies. Pet owners must realize the responsibility of vetinary care or they should not have animals. This animal needs medical attention and it would be abusive of you not to take care of it.

If the problem did occur from the cat licking itself then other than taking him/her to a vet, try clothing her/him... that way she/he wont be able to have any contact with its fur. If the problem doesnt seem to be progressing then you should take him/her to the vet a.s.a.p.

Check him real close for fleas, this usually happens when they have fleas or allergies.
