Perhaps they are... Many of them are extremely intollerant of others and maybe the young see that. Having seen the remarks by some evangelicals following 9/11, blaming homosexuals and such, anybody would begin to question these people and their motives.
Coupled with the likes of Rev. Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church, the extravagance of some of the healing ministries, the radicals in the Christian faith are giving the rest of it a bad name.
I'm one who left the Christian faith. I did so because I realized that truth does in fact exist outside Christianity and that Christianity had imported a great deal from elsewhere.
Perhaps people are finding a way that does not require a god to hate people because they were born gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. Perhaps they realize that alcoholism or addiction to substances is a disease and not a sin. Perhaps they are finding that God's miracles aren't always forthcoming and that the saying "sometimes He says 'no'" is trite. Praying and praying and praying doesn't guarantee results.
True, I've been the witness to 'miracles', but I've seen them elsewhere too. I'm told that those I witness outside of the Church are of the Devil, and intended to draw me away from the truth. Sorry, but I reject that line, or lie.
I don't think that those leaving the church are leaving God, rather they are finding the "God of their understanding". I believe that Deity, the "Great Spirit" is the Deity of all religions who interpret this Deity in their own way.
Those that leave are not lost.

The cause is the message of the modern gospel, and its lack of true saving power as it calls sinners into a religious experience with Christ, but they come lacking repentance. Without repentance you cannot be saved. And as a result the church is creating something like 80-90% of what they commonly call backsliders.
The solution would be to return to the gospel that the church all too soon forgot. You can read more about it in "Hell's Best Kept Secret" by Ray Comfort, and/or listen to the audio message of that same title at http://www.livingwaters.com

Jesus Christ! We ought to all mate, immediately, and keep this condemned united states from the fires of hell. Our numbers in simple terms should be quadrupled, in the different case the Godless ba*tards will quickly be hurling The Satanic Bible even with the actuality that our church homes homestead windows! yet wait - earlier all of us take to the streets to locate fellow evangelicals with whom we may be able to professional-create ... we ought to first all be married.

perhaps it's the move away from modernism into postmodernism. if a church has a more "modern" approach to life, young people who are inundated with the postmodern culture think it is antiquated and outdated.

We can only hope so. I'd like to think it is because people are getting smarter. However, I suspect that it is because people are getting lazier and less responsible.

I would wager that the hypocrisy and rigidity "drove" them out. It certainly did me.
