I am Christian and could not imagine a Godless world with no meaning or point. I imagine that other faiths have similar views.
Do athiests believe that they will remain eternally in the grave as bones and dust in eternal death?

I'm sorry if I offended anyone but I did not mean your life was meaningless or pointless. I too love, live, have a family and friends. Perhaps it is "nicer" as someone put it to be Christian because it is not the end of life but a begining of a new one with other believers.

Interesting question.

I suppose the question is, does "godless" equal "meaningless"?

In otherwords, if the question is, are atheist those who essentially believe life is meaningless, to this -- despite not being an atheiest, I once was -- I would answer no. Generally there are two types of atheists, the low type, and the high type. The low types are those for whom the question of life's meaning never really dawned upon them. They haven't really given the question much thought and are just "atheist" by default of not having any larger worldview in particular. They basically are just selfish and structure life around that egocentrism. But even for the low atheiests, they find meaning in striving to get more for themselves, and even they fear death. High atheists, on the other hand, are generally more educated, and possess relatively high degrees of morals and values, and seem to be more in love with rational laws and science than what they consider "blind belief". Such individuals, however, can be very spiritual in every other sense, and tend to believe life is meaningful even if they believe death is the end. They see life as a kind of miracle that creates its own meaning, but is meaningful nonetheless. I'm sure I haven't done them the service they probably deserve, but I hope I'm on track.

The atheist worldview essentially takes comfort in the idea that death is the end. For the low atheists because they tend to just go with what they see, and what they see is that death is the end, and so death being the end makes it possible to be selfish without fear, for once you are dead who cares what you did while living? For the high atheists because the idea of life after death in the traditional religious sense seems more barbaric and brutal than the alternative ("if God sends most people to hell, is that a God I'd really want to exist with?" that sort of argument). Furthermore, for high atheists, as for most people, life -- despite its many joys and benefits -- is ultimately a burden. Ask most people if they would want to live forever, and I think the answer would be "no". Maybe life extension, but forever? If death is the end, it offers a way out of the isolation and burden we all feel as human beings that we are willing to put up with for a time, but not forever.

But again, in both cases, you don't find utter meaninglessness. I think generally the core feeling that life is meaningless -- not the belief, but the very feeling itself -- is not a sustainable mode of being for any human being.

Yes, I am totally godless. My life is the meaning I give it. I don't feel the need to ruin the one life I have by strictly adhering to religious dogma. I find the most meaning in my life in my relationships with my family and friends. Yes, I believe I will remain eternally dead in the grave.

Atheists may be 'godless', but bear in mind that word has connotations that do not apply to all Atheists.

Atheists may not believe in a God, but most of them believe in goodness, and have a very high value on humanity and doing what's right. A life without God does not mean a life without meaning.

I think that too many people have associated being godless with having no morals or being evil, and that is simply not true. And I say that as a believer in God myself.

Does this mean that you're a Christian because you find the Christian reality "nicer"?

But about your question, I would say no. We will not remain eternally in the grave. When the synapses stop firing, you're basically not there anymore. Consider an electric circuit. When you unplug something, the circuit is gone but all of the components remain. Eternity isn't too long when you're not there to watch it go by anymore.

Why does believeing in the real world that you can see and touch, mean you don't care about life? That's stupid thinking. Life is about living and learning. Everybody does it in this world. You're bound to your body so we all find meaning in this life. If you didn't like the world, a person is quite free to kill themselves.

Nobody knows what happens after death. Yes, you can believe what you're told, but that doesn't make it true. You won't know until that time comes.

Hi,

I think Athiest not mean totally Godless. Since they count and believe in themselves. They believe can control universe by their power, everything will be centralize in their own. So, I guess in their view it's can be they are God for themselves.
Regarding death, maybe they believer that if death they will not feel anything. there is no life after death.

that's my opinion.

Cheers!!

Why would I focus on something that I'll be too dead to experience?

Why would being an atheist make my life pointless? I live, I love, and laugh, and then I die and I no longer am. I have meaning in my life, the real question is do you? How does living your life for someone else feel? Doesn't it make sense that one should live a life, knowing that in the end they have to answer to themselves? Why should I live my life governed by a higher authority?

I can't imagine a world with no meaning or point because I give my world both. But I don't have to imagine no god. There is none. When you die you die. Good reason to live life in the here and now. It's made me much more of a humanitarian.
