Marrying him won't guarantee him a greencard. It's a long process. How long it takes depends on where you live, I think. And it costs a whole lotta money. So... if you've both got enough money to pay for all the paperwork (which, btw does NOT guarantee his greencard either), do what you feel is right in your heart. I think you can find all the forms and information you need on the INS website. I hope I've been a little helpful to you. :)

First off, I would advise against hiring a lawyer. There are lots of information available on the web, and other sources. Researching on your own and finding out as much as possible on how the immigration filings go, is the best way, I think. There are lots of people out there going through similar situations like yours. There is a forum at http://immigration.about.com/library/navigate/mpboards.htm
It really helps. You should check it out for things like stats on some metro areas on how long a PR filings will take. Nothing is promissed, but it'll give you more info than going to a lawyer and learning nothing. Know more and No more ignorance.

No. It could cost you a lot of money to keep them here. If they decide to go back to their country and leave you with debt and children you will be in a legal battle that will cost you a lot of money. And it will be hard to find a lawyer to take your case unless you have a lot of money to invest. If your loved one is from Mexico or any other central or south American country you are not going to get any good results in your favor. You are just asking for problems you don't need. If your love doesn't want to become a citizen send them packing because they are just using you for what they can get from the American(s).

After 9/11 it doesn't automatically get the person a greencard, but I do believe that the policy of the spouse becoming a legal US citizen after 5 years of marriage still applies. Don't quote me on it, but I do believe that is still true.

Depending on what country he comes from, the amount of difficulty will go from bad to worse, Make sure to document everything you guys do together. take family photos. make sure you know a great deal abut eachother's lives. Make sure he knows where the silverware it.
I am talking from experience. My immigrant husband and I were put through the ringer during our first interview and forced to wait two years for the second one.

Are u sure he loves u back? Some illegal immigrants do anything to become citizens. Although, its not as easy anymore, u must go through a whole process for this. You should call immigration and ask.

First answer is correct. It depends upon a number of factors, and it is getting harder to gain papers by marrying.
SEE A GOOD IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY ASAP!!!
You said you were going to do whatever it takes to make him legal. Today, because of the hostility towards illegals, do not wait; see a good immigration attorney now!

it may have been that simple 40 years ago but today, i feel it may be a little on the difficult side to fix things such as you speak of, do many hours of research to find out, then you will learn the problem, be positive in you search, because immigration has no heart.

YOU may love him with all your heart as you say, but he may have ulterior motives for marrying you. Whatever you do, make sure he's legal BEFORE you marry him.
Just tell him that you don't mind being engaged until he bocomes a legal citizen. If he complains or tries to talk you into marriage before that, then he's using you. I hope that's not the case, but I see it here (Los Angeles) a lot. Good luck.

this can be one of the avenues, but it's not guaranteed if ur bf has any criminal record or he just dont pass the interview....if he's a professional he can get a job where the employer is willing to sponsor him...good luck...plus marrying him for that reason defeats the purpose of marriage.
