I would definitely consider a late 1990's Nissan Altima, or perhaps an older Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. They will all be reliable, affordable, and pretty efficient.
If you are willing to sacrifice space you could consider looking into used versions of the Honda Civic (mine is a 1999, with 108,000 miles, drives like new, with a blue book value of somewhere near $5000, so you could probably get one with that kind of mileage for that kind of price), Toyota Corolla, or Nissan Sentra.

Definitely a Toyota or Nissan. Hondas are overrated and not as trouble free as everyone would like to think and generally what youre going to find in a 5000 Honda is something modified and beat to crap.

Chevy Cavaliers seem very tough, enduring, and low-maintenance. We have one bought used in 2001 that has kept on trucking with only one repair.

look for an older integra or civic, you can spend 3K and have 2K to fix it up the way you like and still have a very dependable good mpg car.
