Did the pain come on as soon as the anesthetic wore off? If this is the case, there could be an extra canal that was not found during the procedure (this happens sometimes when the canals are "hidden"). It could also be due to the instrument going through the end of the tooth during instrumentation. This is a common problem with root canals. Also, if the pain occurs when biting down, it could be due to trauma from the tooth contacting another tooth. Any time a patient has pain I would want them to let me know. Don't hesitate to call your dentist. We are obligated to take care of our patients.

IT is common for patient to experience pain from mild to severe after root canal treatment completed. It is usually because the process of removing the nerve and sealing the canal with medication (think of it like rubbing alcohol against open cut to disinfect) can cause severe inflamation at the root apex. Take the pain medication that the dentist prescribed. If it does not help, you can ask the dentist to give you stronger pain killer. Antibiotic such as Amoxil, or Clavulin(much stronger if needed) can be taken along with the pain killer. MOST of the time the pain experiencing up to 2 weeks after root canal treatment completed has nothing to do with infections. So do yourself a favour, try not to speculate too much. It is sometimes unavoidable and you just have to wait for nature to do its course. YOU should however call and check with your dentist for an clinical evaluation to comfirm the diagnosis

I feel her pain, I'm having one right now too that is just awful! It could be infection or trauma. I had 1 other root canal that went fine, I did have some pain from it but not like this one. If she's saying OHH this hurts so much, tell her to get back to the DDS. Try the meds that sooth gums for babies like orajel or benzocaine around the gum of the tooth to try to settle some of the trauma pain.

It is usually nothing. The dentist should have giving her something for the pain. Root canal is very painful. But the very best advice is to go back to the dentist and have it looked at. It could be nothing but it is better to be safe than sorry.GO!!!!(you could loose the tooth if your not careful)

There is a STRONG chance that the filling is too high. Did it happen after she chewed on it? If yes, that's exactly what it is. She can do one of two things:
1) Not eat on it until she's getting her permanant filling in which case she can ask that they "reduce" the filling down more.
2) Go to the Endodontist and have him reduce some of the filling down and then check with indicator paper (the one you grind with to check bite)
ps it's not dry socket. That happens when a tooth is extracted.
Good luck. That sharp pain can make a grown man cry.
She'll be fine with that reduction. Get it done as soon as possible.

Call her dentist first thing in the morning. I've had a few root canals (just had one done on Monday) and I have never had that problem.

It could be an infection, or perhaps the dentist didn't get all of the nerve out of the tooth. Unfortunately this is quite common and it would need to be taken care of right away. They should be able to tell with an x-ray.
