OOh, I've been there! The best thing to do is talk with the teacher and set up a homework book system with him or her. This requires total consistency from you, and from the teacher. The teacher needs to make time during the day to write in the homework book what is due for the next day, and anything upcoming. Then signs it. So your son will know what books or papers he needs to take home. Your son must show you the homework book when he gets home, you check it at the end of the evening to make sure all is done, and check his homework - and you sign the book. He is responsible for packing up his stuff to go back to school, as well. At the beginning of the day, he gives his homework book to the teacher, and it starts over. This must be done daily - and actually doesn't take a lot of extra time for the teacher, so don't worry about it. The teacher will appreciate the results! Either you or the teacher can comment any day on the progress the child has made - and make sure you tell him when he has done well.
This works amazingly well. My son, now almost 15, came and read the question over my shoulder and said - it worked great, and look at me now! He's right. He became much more organized, and now he continues to be an "A" student. We used homework books religiously probably til gr. 5, but it was really most useful when we did the thing with the teacher in grades 1 and grade 2 - till he could be more trusted.
Wish you lots of luck. It works to get notes from school, etc. as well! Give him lots of positive reinforcement when he gets it right!

Well I think you should give him homework every day. Monday - Thursday. If he has no homework you can make him practice his spelling words or reading simple books or writing his address and phone number. You could also make up a few math problems for him. Tell him that if he doesnt bring home his homework you will give him some of your own. Make it a bit of an overload. He will stop forgetting pretty quick. 4 pages of moms homework or 1-2 of his teachers. Kids are not stupid. He will catch on pretty quick. Good Luck

Get really involved. You can teach him good homework skills and keep it up beat. Talk to his teacher after school and find out what's for homework. In grade 1 there shouldn't be all that much of it to keep track of.

I agree with the other moms on the homework logs. Those folders that hold work sheets come in handy too. You can get them in fun themes too like Star Wars etc.

well if you go with him in the school then before you left try to ask his classamates to double check if they really have a homework? If also they they have an assignment notebooks where all their subjects assigmants or homeworks will be wriiten there. try to browse his notes when you came home. As kids they always try to avoid responsibility and i Think you should make means to encourage yoru kid to be responsibel as early as now. Make some arrangements with him if he des his homeworks without reminders gives him rewards.

Send the teacher a note or stop by and talk to him/her about it. Ask if he/she can remind your son. Maybe he finds the homework is difficult and needs more help when he comes home?

Get him a binder or folder instead with an agenda booklet. At my old school the school gives out little agenda books to every grade and they have to write down the homework. Just tell him to put his homework in his folder and he could put it all in his backpack.

Take control of the situation by showing up at his school room, and make sure he gets his home work. From what you say he's sharp enough to not be forgetting his home work.
And then perhaps talk to the teacher, and make a deal with her to make sure he gets his home work before he can go home.
Good luck.

Ask his teacher to create a homework log for him. It's a booklet that he has to take home each night with his homework, and you have to sign iit each night as verification that he brought his homework home and did it.
Good luck.
