Gathering crops during the moderate season is preparation for the storms of winter. If you don't prepare, you're going to starve to death.

In the cultural conditions under which this was written, subsistance farming was the way of life. That means the whole family had to participate in order to provide enough for everyone. One lazy person could ruin things for everybody. Therefore, the disgrace.

It means that even if you do extra work,
you still need to get done with what needs doing.

In the proverb, the son thinks he is wise for collecting crops in the summer, which is early. Fall, one season after summer, is the harvest season. Just because he has picked some crops in the summer does not mean he should rest during the main harvest season. There is work to be done.

The son who gathers crops in summer will have food for he and his family for the cold months which lie ahead, when there are no crops to gather. So he is wise to take what is given, when it is given, whereas the son who sleeps during the harvest time (Gathering of crops in summer) will awake and all food source is gone and while he slept his winter food supply was rotting in the fields, being wasted so to speak, so he is a disgrace because he foolishly allowed his potential food supply for he and his family, to go to waste in the fields so in the cold months ahead, he and his family will have nothing thereby being seen as a disgraceful son.

s'cuse me
If the farmer lazes away during the most important time of the year (harvest) wouldn't that mean that his family and or community doesn't eat?

On the spirutual side - this proverb is also a prophesy and a lesson
lesson is that while the teacher is here with us, take advantage of his presence
prophesy is basically the same... Jesus was here for a short time - some took advantage of his presence, many many others ignored it or worse - denounced it.

who has the right to make judgment

actually the son who worked in the summer heat, died of heat exhaustion.which was not really too wise.
the sleeper already made other arrangements to feed his family because he knew the dangers of the summer heat
he who snoozes is well rested and can think straight

He who gathers crops will live a long time. He who sleeps might as well be gone already!

That verse is dealing with wisdom. It simply means that the wise son does what he needs to do and gets his job done. The one who does not get what he should causes shame.
