After seeing one of the greatest fights ever in 1985 when Marvelous Marvin Hagler ko'd Thomas Hearns in the 3rd round, i often wondered why they never fought a rematch. And would the outcome been any different. Would Hearns had boxed more, using his height and reach, or would Marvin would've chopped him down again in the same fashion as the first fight. what do you think would've happened in a rematch?

Pancho ~
The rematch would end just like the first fight for the "Hitman" once Marvelous knocked out Tommy in such a brutal fashion it's always in both fighters minds, especially the fighter that was knocked out.
Tommy came out and knew he had to land something to keep the aggressor Hagler off so he threw a over hand right that hit Hagler on top of his head and Hearns broke his hand. That was Tommy's best shot and Hagler ate it ans asked for another. Would things have been different if Tommy didn't break his hand? In my opinion, things would've ended the exact same way they did.
Hagler was just too much for Hearns to handle. Whatever Tommy brought to the table, Hagler would have an answer for. Hagler would not be kept on the outside he would slip and bob his way into his punching distance. Hagler was just way too strong for Tommy.
Tommy even said "Hagler hit me the hardest I ever been hit in my life, harder than Ray (Leonard) and Duran, that man could crack." with that being said and from what everyone witnessed in their first match Hagler 5th round Knockout.
Thanks for the question Pancho.

This was Haglers career defining fight it was an absolute demolition job on a man who was a great himself. I asked a question a couple of days ago about what is your most watched fight ever and if i answered my own question it would be without doubt the Hagler Vs Hearns 3 Rnd war, as for the rematch i think the same as everybody else it would go much the same way, that would be if Tommy even had the mindset to get back in the ring with someone who absolutely destroyed him, i tell you what i would still pay to see them two get it on now. The biggest compliment i could pay the Hitman is that he was the only fighter i ever saw rock Hagler for that split second in the first round and to do that is some achievement, the only problem was i think it just made Hagler even more determined to get him out of there as soon as possible. In a rematch i would agree with Santana D i think it would probably last a little bit longer with Hearns using the ring a bit more and not trying to trade as much as he did in the real fight but i just don't think Tommy had the skills to keep Hagler off him like Leonard did for a whole fight, i would say 5th or 6th rnd KO to Hagler.

Pancho this was one of the greatest fights in boxing history especially that first round which was electric. Hearns hit Hagler with some shots that would have floored lesser men but Hagler kept coming forward and threw bombs. In a rematch even if Hearns tried to box more, Hagler would still press the action and knock him out within 7 rounds.

why did hearns lose the way he did, his biggest reason for his defeat in my opinion was his desire to match brawn with the stronger brawler it was hyped in the prefight and hearns was determined to show he could take hagler`s best and be victorious a rematch i think hearns would have been better prepared would have tried to out box and keep his distance, a long reach and hard puches coming in catching hagler would again have opened cuts on hagler, hagler would have continued moving forward the rematch in my opinion would have went longer quite possible hagler wopuld have landed enough body blows to slow hearns and still score a ko but a chance remains cuts could have forced the fight to stop and hearns a tko victory or a decision outcome pick`em ala sugar ray leonard hagler fight very close could have went either way.

Pancho - Hagler/Hearns is not one of the greatest fights of all time. It is THE greatest fight of all time.
Fights like Hagler/Hearns and Hagler/Leonard are unique and should stand on their own.
A rematch? Same result.

Hagler would have probably won again. Hearns was a game fighter against anyone. He sure showed Leonard that.

I wondered about that also. I think Hagler would have won again. Just shows me how great sugar Ray Lenard was because he fought some of the best maybe of all time and beat them all.

Hearns would box more and if he couldn't keep Hagler off of him, he would get KO'ed again.
