Muhammed (pbuh) married many women. Most of them were to be able to legally take care of them. Some were as political alliance. The virgin thing stems from the same place as it does in Christianity and Judaism. It is more of an integrity and morality thing.
Remember that The Prophet married Khadija first. When he was married to her, he took no other wife. There was a true love between them. She was the first to become Muslim, after he recieved the revelation.

well he married widows and divorcees -- to show that WIDOWS HAD RIGHTS TO REMARRY JUST LIKE A WIDOWER. also not every muslim man demands a virgin as u said. there are many bachelors who have married a widow or divorcee.. just that some people will never bother to pay attention to such people.
TO HAROON -- when people speak this way about others it just shows the upbringing. people with no self-respect never respect others -- u prove it right sir.

both the man and the woman are supposed to be chaste, unless they are divorced or widowed from a previous marriage, so if the woman was in a previous marriage and didnt have illegal sexual intercourse then thats fine, but same rules apply for the guy
