Both HD-DVD and BLuRay support 1080p. Some players have not yet implemented that output, but all are expected to eventually. Both formats are capable of full 1080p resolution, but right now BluRay is having picture quality problems, most likely from the way the discs are encoded. I'm sure those will be resolved, and that there won't be any significant difference in performance between the two.

First of all, all you peopple need to get your facts straight before talking!!

Both Blu-Ray and HD DVD play @ 1080p resolution. If you were smart enough to read ANY online reviews regarding the competition between the two, you would know that HD DVD is currently doing better in terms of picture quality when compared to Blu-ray.

Second of all, Blu-Ray players are typically more expensive than HD DVD players because Blu Ray cant drop the price on its players as it will undercut their PS3 consoles being released later this year.

So if you had to go and buy one now, you should buy an HD DVD player as it offers better prices and cheaper media because it does not have to compress the image as much.

Lastly, almost 99.9% of the studios that are releasing HD DVD movies will be releasing in the VC1 compression technology rather then the MPEG2 compression tech that Blu-Ray has been using. In case you didn't know MPEG2 is the same old format that is being used for the compression of DVDs and has been in use for the last 8 years...

So u make the choice.

Oh PS: Blu Ray has also been having problems with their player firmwares and image artifacts due to its compression technique.

Hope this helped, don't forget to vote. :)

If you can tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i, I mean visually tell the difference, then you want Blu-ray. I can't (1080 is 1080 to me, they are both HD). But, I am guessing Blu-ray will win like VHS did over Beta max in the 80's.

Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray are brand new formats, and the players are seriously expensive right now. If you are looking to buy one of these, my advice is wait one year to see which format wins, then buy a unit after the price has come down.

Instead, go out and buy an upscaling unit (takes standard DVDs and converts them from 480 to 1080). They are less than $150, and look almost as good. Then, when the format war is over and the prices are down, run out and buy a Blu-ray.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

In terms of picture quality, blu ray and hd dvd are essentially identical. so that means all the cool things like 1080p progressive scanning are all there. Where they differ is on a design/engineering level. ALso since blu ray theoritically can hold much more than hd dvd, it can hold longer video data.

No, HD DVD is only 1080i, not the full potential of
High-Definition of 1080p from the Blu-Ray format.
