your statement is correct, the soul in Sanskrit is described as Sat-Cit-Ananda, the soul or self is constituted of eternality, knowledge and bliss, the soul is part and parcel of the Supreme soul or God and can never be effected by anything material including pain.
The pure consciousness however can be "covered over" with inferior material energy, due to individual desire to exist separately from the spiritual world, the pure soul is then compared to a raindrop that falls into the mud, the spiritual body attracts a material body that is perfectly matched to suit the mentality created by desire and activities.
The spirit soul then becomes grossly illusioned by the material energy and identifies with the material form as objective reality, in sanskrit this is described as "Maya" which literally means "that which is not"
At the time of death the subtle or astral body that is constituted of mind, intelligence and ego, leaves the material body with this false sense of identity and is therefore under the influence of duality, consequently the subtle body suffers and enjoys to re-establish a level equilibrium before being re-embodied, the original spiritual body thus being again covered by a gross and subtle identity, explaining the western concept of hell, which is experienced by the subtle body not the soul.
Therefore it is imperative to purify the subtle mind and intelligence through spiritual activities and revive or in western terms resurect the spiritual body existing within the material body.
The Bhagavad Gita As It Is specifically confirms your realisation in the following slokas from Chapter 2 Verses 20-25
BG2.20: For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
BG 2.21: O Pārtha, how can a person who knows that the soul is indestructible, eternal, unborn and immutable kill anyone or cause anyone to kill?
BG 2.22: As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.
BG 2.23: The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.
BG 2.24: This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.
BG 2.25: It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

The soul is the mind, the will, and the emotions. The spirit is the part of you that is eternal and the real you. I don't know how we feel emotional pain. It must be connected with the body through those nerve cells because that is how people who have alot of emotional stress end up with heart problems. The human mind and body is so complex there are many things that I don't understand about it and I don't think scientists understand it all either.

Bart Simpson asked the question (about Hell), "Wouldn't you just get used to it like a warm bath?" That question has some truth to it. Scientists have found that eventually after a certain extreme in temperature, your nerve cells eventually will run out of feeling, and become "used to it", like a warm bath. Historically, a "soul" hasn't been a physical object such as our body. It's always been thought of as an immaterial spirit. So no, I don't think a soul can feel pain. At least if it can, not eternally.

Because pain in the soul is not physical pain.
Your soul is not reliant on your brain and body to exist, but rather the other way around. It is not a part of your body, but your body is a smaller part of your whole person--your soul. Your body and brain exist because of your soul.
Therefore, you do not actually need to have a body to experience pain in your soul. Thus, the entire concept of eternity.

Actually, while the studies of hell and so on had been first written, it used to be believed that the bodily frame itself might be forged into hell. They actually believed that the risen lifeless might upward thrust physically as much as heaven (the sky), or down into hell, (underground) on judgement day. This is proven fantastically by means of the truth that Jesus' bodily frame left the grave and floated as much as heaven. (If you'll be able to don't forget, the tower of Babel used to be developed to arrive heaven (the sky), as good, extra proving the nonsensical origins of Christianity) However, as is the customized, Christianity has distorted and reinterpreted those old myths, in an try to lead them to are compatible into the gaps in technological know-how. We now recognize that heaven is not within the sky, and lifeless our bodies don't seem to be going to drift up there. So, this entire interdimensional stuff used to be created to interchange those ideals.
