I used to work at an apple farm and make carmel apples. We used room temperature apples and Kraft caramel from the can. So I am guessing your caramel had too much water in it or it was too warm. Our cans used to sit in a bed on hot water, kind of like a double boiler/crockpot kind of thing if that makes any sense. Just make sure it coats the back of a spoon first, then dip tha apples.

It's really important for the apples to be thoroughly washed and dried because caramel won't adhere to waxy or even slightly damp apple peels. But it sounds like your kids had that covered, so it's hard to say exactly what went wrong.

For the next batch, I might suggest buying and melting a higher-quality caramel loaf (Peter's brand is good). This Halloween cooking blog also has some good tips for turning out great apples. Hope this helps!

Did you wash the apples well w/ detergent to get the wax off first? If not, that's why. The caramel's also got to reach a certain temp to set up on the apples and harden a bit. Use a candy thermometer next time.

It sounds like the caramel was to warm. Maybe the apples need to be cold?

I've never made caramel apples.

Did you add a little milk? Make sure that the apples are completely dry when U do it, good luck.
