If you wish to become Amish, you may. There is no law against it. I live only minutes from an Amish community, and I can say that several local people have joined their community.

I'm sure they get new converts occasionally, but they do intermarry a lot. There are actually several serious genetic conditions that are very prevalent among the Amish because of intermarriage, like hemophilia was a problem among European royalty.

Yes the amish accept "Newbies" so to speak, they do no intermarry in the family way but will marry another amish from another group in another county or state.

The different communities sometimes travel around to intermarry, but there is a lot of inbreeding, you're right.

I think they are very intermarried and it is beginning to cause genetic problems.
