what is the purpose for Jockey agents

They can get a new rider more work (mounts/rides) because they have access to more barns & trainers & owners who call the Agent when they are in need of help in their barn/stable. When you have an agent, you need to be available on a moments notice & move quick, like a bunny, if you want to get on their horses. Agents take a percentage of your wages & more if you make it into an actual race & get into the winner's circle. There are different kinds of Agents. Some only book licensed Jockeys, while others will book a regular exercise rider or apprentice Jockeys for various barns & trainers. Some require a written contract, while others will do it (book rides) by word of mouth with a handshake. Most race tracks require Agents to have a special license to do this type of work.

Jockey agent is like a sports agent.. He tries to get the best deal he can for his client. In horse racing it would be the best (fastest) horse. Or like sometimes (mostly leading riders) jockeys will ride all the horses from a barn, or a trainer, or owner. The agent puts (most) of these deals together. For example... If purse is $10.000. The winning horse gets 45% which is $4500.00 the Jockey gets 10% of that $450.00 There is also a riders fee, the better the rider the more the owner pays. Usually around 1 or 2 hundred, Flat fee..win or lose. The agent gets his/her % of what the jockey makes on the deals they put together.
So if you are looking to be a jockey agent.. May I suggest.. Get the best riders as your clients.. and race at the largest (biggest purses) tracks you can..
