My Grandfather died about a year ago and he was quite well off and all of a sudden my parents became obsessed with money. When they were sorting through all his things they were like vultures and I felt so ashamed that I was related to them. He had made a will and everything but it was like they just couldn't help themselves! I know we need money to survive but it's as though they think it's the be all and end all. They have always been materialistic, especially my mother, but it's just taken over. It's like they think they are better people for having money. Am I making any sense or am I just being naive? Are people really impressed by someone's bank balance?

Ah, human nature. Money can make people greedy. And you are in a position to learn a great deal from what is going on around you right now. Step back a little and watch the scramble. Resolve in your heart never to be moved by the promise of wealth nor position. Thank you for posting your question. - Chris!

sadly yes money can turn a person ugly. People are very greedy but it is good that you are aware of this. Dont think that you are naive if anything you are wise beyond your years. Never let go your values and remember that money is not the most important thing in the world

I think all the Celeb's are living proof that money can do more damage than anything....none of them speak to their parents or siblings, do they???

Money can't buy happiness although I know we all need it, any thing to excess just spoils you.....your family are probably doing what most people would do....it's hard not too get sucked in by the material things in life...they'll come to their senses in the end I'm sure....money doesn't last forever kid........you just keep your head about things and let them get on with it........

Not you really being naive, but we live in a materialistic world, and this is a good example of GREED. You'd be amazed to see so many "tight" family units break up when there's a will on the table. Try not to be like that yourself.

money does strange things to good ppl... it becomes their god.... it gives ppl a false sense of security and it makes them blind to the out side world and the uglyness there and some ppl think it makes their problems just go *poof*, but they dont understand that even bigger and uglier and darker problems come their way... yes, ppl will look to the balance in the check book, and that is all they will or may see... ppl with money do not know if they are liked or loved for who they are or what they are ?? money wise that is !!! there is nothing you can do about your parents thought or actions... just keep your feet planted firmly on the ground and do NOT let the dollar sign become YOUR god.... God bless

You are right, your parents are very wrong. Sad to say there is little you can do to or for them, just continue to believe in what you do and get out of there as soon as possible, don't worry they will be happy they wont have to support you, I am sure they have already made remarks on how much you are costing them. Bad People, bad Situation. You are the only good in their lives and they don't know it

I think so. Not every one wants to be millionaires, but just be secure in the fact that there is always enough in the kitty to live on when bills etc arrive, and enough left over to perhaps have one good holiday a year, and not be embarrassed when Birthdays/Weddings/Christmas comes around and you have to scrimp or go into debt to purchase gifts.

Of course money can turn you ugly all you have to do is take a look at Jocelyn "The Beast of Wildenstein" to see I am right.
Her milllions didnt do her any good did they???
The Ugly Cow !!!

Seriously though I know what you mean, I have seen it happen so many times and it is kind of embarrassing to see it.
Hopefully I will never behave like that!!!

ALTHOUGH YOUR PARENTS WERE ALREADY MATERIALISTIC, THEY ARE JUST GOING TO GET WORSE BEING THAT THEY HAVE MORE MONEY TO SUPPORT THEIR HABIT.
WHAT SOME PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND IS THAT, WHEN YOU ALWAYS HAVE, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW HOW TO BE GRATEFUL OR APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE, BEING THAT THEY FEEL AS THOUGH THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE IT!
WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN IN A PLACE WHERE YOU NEVER HAD ENOUGH, YOU WILL APPRECIATE WHAT EVER IT IS THAT YOU GET! IN OTHER WORDS, WHEN YOU ARE IN A PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING AT ALL, IT KEEPS YOU HUMBLE AND MAKES YOU WANT TO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU GET BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW HOW SUFFICIENT IT WILL BE!
DID THIS HELP?
