When a brain does swell, since the skull does not leave much free space for it to do so, it starts causing pressure on the brain itself. Now depending on the amount of pressure caused, the symptoms and signs will vary. To start with, there would be headache, maybe vomits, raised blood pressure, slower pulse, convulsions, semi coma and coma. Cranial nerves and parts of the body may get paralyzed, and breathing may get affected. If the pressure inside the brain rises more, then part of the brain may be pushed down from its normal situation (tentorial or medullary herniation) causing abrupt or immediate coma and subsequently death.

I would depend on the cause and how much the brain is swelling. There is very little room for brain swelling and in the medical field we are limited as to what we can do to accommodate the swelling. Therefore, the person is very, very sick but could also die. What other information can you give?

the dr. would have to relieve the pressure by placing a shunt in the head.
