To take in possession as if your own---To the definition guy above, in Biblical times, if you thinking of it, or doing it, you did. The question was referring to Moses' time of the translated word, covet, from the Bible. Just like the argument someone gave me about where I put that in 1240, a French soldier invading Sicily, took from a mother and raped her daughter, and in Sicily, in 1240 Ma-Fia, meant my daughter...(this is when and where the word Mafia comes from) -even Italian Opera words from 200 years ago don't translate literally anymore-regardless of poetic license-So,someone told me figlia was daughter in Italian-thanks, and so it is. You get the picture. >> i.e. To lust in ones heart is just as to have conceived this in fact....during the times of Moses, different times, the word in Moses' time meant-To take in possession as if your own.

Covet means to desperately want something... like... you and your best friend are into a collectable card game, and he gets the rarest card... and the thought that he has one and you don't just tosses around in your mind over and over... you wish you had one too. Instead of being happy for him, and getting over it, you are jealous of his possessions.
It can apply to anything, whether it is wanting the most popular girl in school to be your girlfriend, envying your neighbor's car, wanting the newest hardware for your computer even if you can't afford it, or whatnot.
It is, simply put, desperately wanting something that does not belong to you.
Coveting tends to lead to breaking another commandment (coveting your neighbor's wife : adultery; coveting your neighbor's things : theft; coveting your neighbor's social standing : idolatry; so on and so forth).

Covetousness is the principle on which modern American marketing is based. It means "desire," but also something on beyond that. It is the willingness to do what is not good for you because of the desire to possess something. It is the inclination to feel superior to others because of one's possessions, or the wish to possess something so as to feel superior to others.
"Covet" ultimately comes from the same Latin root as the name "Cupid," the name of the little guy with the bow and arrow that flies around causing people to make mistakes because of overpowering desire.

To covet means you are so jealous of what the other person has (his Ox, his A*s or donkey, his Wife) that you want them for yourself and want to see your neighbor not have them anymore.

"Covet" basically means jealously wanting something that belongs to someone else. It is a form of selfish desire.

Wanting what your neighbor has. In those days that could be his herds, his wife, his money belt etc. In other words wanting what is not yours, to the exclusion of working on getting the same thing for yourself.
