Sometimes it just takes practice. Get your family to help you by simulating the exercise at home. Relaxation is very important, and using eye contact and a smile can be very effective.
There are some very good books on the subject of public speaking, but basically practice and review by people you trust is the way to go.

And, sorry, but I have to disagree with Bookworm, below. If you avoid eye contact with your audience, it makes you look nervous and un-trustworthy, as well as unprepared. I have done a LOT of public speaking, and am a trained actor and MC. Trust me on this. Looking your audience in the eye shows strength of character and a strong resolve.

First of all sweety you are not alone. I am in college and I still have a hard time. You will find out soon that evreryone (no matter how cool they look about it) hates it and is nervous about it like you are. But do try and think of it as it is just you and the person you are asking... How would you talk to them alone? at first you might get red.. it happens but once you get into it you might relax and actually try to do it more. Just take a deep breath and write in a journal tonight about how you feel. It helps to really get to the feelings out.. or talk to someone in the class about how nervous you are in private.. you may feel relieved your not alone. Good luck I know you can be strong!

im really nervous about public speaking too, and i find that it helps when you just take a deep breath and go for it. i know your nervous, but just think your answer through before you speak. if the other people laugh at you or something, they're probably just nervous too and want to make themselves look better. dont worry - everyone gets nervous at one point.

PS imagining everyone in their underwear doesn't work - trust me. instead, dont look people directly in the eye - it makes you more nervous. just look over their shoulder. it really helps me
