When a person you're seeing (exclusively or other) openly expresses their love for you, do you let it go on and on if the feelings are not reciprocated? Is there any way that you would perpetuate this, and in fact offer your own declarations of love if you did not mean it?
I'm not talking about the simple "I love yous" that become automatic in an old comfortable relationship. I'm talking about deep professions of a love beyond all others.
Bottom line - if you are the recipient and the feelings are nowhere near mutual, would you be compelled to set the record straight and let them down easy, instead of allowing them to wallow in false hopes?

Yes, if I don't feel as she doe's, the gentlemanly thing to do is to explain that I am flattered. But, to let her down in a gentle way to hurt her as little as possible.

Any guy or gal who plays with other people's feelings is an obnoxious jerk. Set the record straight and do not let the other suffer in vain.

Yes, I would be very compelled to tell the person the truth and so should you.
