I saw this on My Cousin Vinny the other night. He and his girlfriend asked the same question.
It's like mashed-up corn boiled in water, served to you when done.

it is a ground mealed corn and cooked like cream of wheat but served down south with eggs and butter salt and pepper......anytime you get eggs in the south grits is always served with them........some people even eat them like farina.....with cream and sugar.....
