In science, a hypothesis is a statement about observable phenomenon that can be tested or verified to be true or false.
It is one of the important steps in the scientific method. If you cannot come up with a hypothesis that can be tested you are not doing science.
In mathematics, a hypothesis is a statement that you would be able to prove to be true or not true.

A hypothesis is an unproven general statement you believe to be true, usually based on observation. You can't use an unproven hypothesis to prove something else, until you've proven the hypothesis first.
