Creating more consumers doesn't sound environmentally friendly to me. I better now turn off the tap whilst brushing my teeth, my neighbor has just given birth to twins and there just isn't enough water to go around.

Many people cite the fact that most of us won't see the major effects of environment damage in their lifetime, and most would be in your childrens or grandchildrens lifetimes.

Mabye if you had a small number of children and thought them to be careful to the environment, you would care more about the condition of the earth (just a thought).

You can; however on a finite planet increasing consumption is not sustainable.
So how to have children without increasing consumption?

A good example is Ladakh, india. a high altitude desert that has a stable society for 1,000 years by social and environmental awareness. eg one wife for several men. Monasteries for younger sons. eldest inheriting when marries not on death of older generation. but mostly through a budhist lifestyle & philosophy.

In the west today having children cannot be environmentally friendy because of the consumer industrial growth culture - just try talking to any parents driving MPVs or 4x4s on the school run about what environmental issues they are storing up for their kkids to inherit - the reaction will be universally hostile

Sure.

Caring about the environment does not mean giving up technology, or having children, or other important things in life.

It means doing these things more carefully and thoughtfully. Instead of worrying about things like having children and using water, worry about things like wasting water by having Kentucky Bluegrass lawns in dry climates. Half the water in Denver goes to watering lawns. There's plenty of dumb stuff to fix, without worrying about giving up things that are important to living well.
